Bob is a Marine Engineer holding both UK and Canadian First Class Certificates of Competency. He is also a Qualified Maritime Lead Auditor and ISPS Code Company Security Officer.
Bob began his seagoing career in 1973 as an engineering cadet with British and Commonwealth shipping company. He sailed on numerous vessels including general cargo, bulk carriers, container vessels, Ro-Ro Ferries, High Speed Passenger vessels, etc.
Bob has been involved in safety management since 1994 when he was appointed Manager responsible for development and implementation of the safety management system (ISM Code) at BC Ferries. With a team of 3 masters and 3 chief engineers, plus administrative assistants, Bob successfully introduced the ISM Code into BC Ferries resulting in the certification of three offices and 42 vessels and high speed craft. During this time Bob trained over 500 officers and shore managers in safety management and internal auditing.
In 1996 Bob set up Invicta Marine Ltd. and helped numerous companies develop and implement their systems including: Canadian Coast Guard, Washington State Ferries, Victoria Line, HarbourLynx, Rivtow (SMIT), North Arm Transportation. Bob also developed the internal auditor training course for Canadian Coast Guard and was retained by Transport Canada to develop an alternative to the ISM code for small passenger vessels operating between Canada and the US.
