Colin is a seasoned senior executive, with broad international financially services experience. He is recognized as an industry expert in the area of Global Payments and has held board directorships in both private and public sector payments organizations. A frequent speaker at industry conferences, Colin provides thought leadership in areas having major impact on the industry such as regulatory initiatives. He has recently lead a number of global initiatives through his role as the UK’s SWIFT Board Director focused on creating payments infrastructure in the Emerging Markets and an industry response to address the operational implications of sanctions regulation. Colin has successfully managed and grown large P&L’s ($2 billion revenue) with over 5,000 staff in 50 + countries. His experience in building and leading a Global Payments practice at Deloitte Consulting coupled with his industry experience provides a unique balance between consulting and business experience.
Since 2006, in his role as Vice Chairman Payments, Colin was responsible for all Payments activities for Barclays Bank PLC.His responsibilities included operations, technology, risk and industry relations. The scope of this role ie covering all group payments activity (corporate, retail, investment banking and private banking) is a unique one amongst global banks. The development budget exceeded $1billion and included design, development and deployment of new global payments platform and the reengineering and centralizing of the operations to support both the processing of Barclays payments as well as the commercialization of the platform. As Chairman of the Faster Payments Scheme he was responsible for delivering the world first real time payment system for the UK.
Colin held the following directorships and committee positions: UK Payments Council, APACS (Chairman), Faster Payments Senior Sponsors Group (Chairman), SWIFT UK Board, SWIFT Global Board and Chairman of the Global Sanctions Operations Forum. In addition he was a member of the Bank of England’s Senior Bank Operations Group. He is actively involved in working with the Bank of England and the FSA in ensuring that the Liquidity and Living Will legislation has a sound operational foundation from a payments perspective.
Prior to this position, Colin was the MD responsible for the establishment of a new business unit at ABNAMRO bank with a charter from the Board to white label ABNAMRO’s back office processing and products to other financial institutions. This role resulted from a strategy study conducted for the Bank by Colin while he the Director responsible for the Payments Practice at Deloitte Consulting. When Colin left to join Barclays Bank the business had generated over $200 million of annuity revenue in its first full year of operations.
During his four years with Deloitte Consulting in New York, he built a talent base able to compete with world class payments strategy houses. Colin developed thought ware that enabled the practice to develop a solid client base. In addition to the payments focus he also developed an operational risk capability, which he delivered to a number of domestic and international banks.
During his time as MD, head of cash management at Citibank and EVP head of Financial Institutions and Payments at Bank of America he built highly successfully global businesses highlighted by a good balance between solid annuity revenue and innovation. An example, being the establishment of the EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer business) in the US with an 80% plus market share of state and federal programs.
He has deep experience in managing Transaction Services businesses in the emerging markets, with Citibank, Bank of America and Barclays (ABSA in South Africa)
Since establishing Global Payments Advisory LLC in 2010,Colin has done work for a number a major global financial institutions, these include US, European and Asian banks as well as providing advisory services to major technology companies.
A particular focus over the past two years has been the development of mobile banking/payments strategies for emerging market economies based on a regulatory compliant, repeatable, utility-based solution.
Colin holds degrees from the University of Witwatersrand (B.Comm), University of Southern California (BS; MBA) and attended Harvard Business School PMD program.
