Professor and Biotech Executive with a strong mix of business and academic experience. Established academic labs in the area of proteomics and personalized medicine, helped launch one non-profit research institute as founding CEO, and contributed to 6 public and start-up biotech companies as a consultant or at the senior management level. From ***** , was Assistant Professor at the Salk Institute. Received the prestigious 1998 Pew Scholar Award and discovered a molecular machinery that has diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the field of oncology, aging, stem cell biology, neurodegenerative disease and muscular atrophy. In 2000, joined Diversa (NASDAQ: VRNM) as Principal Scientist to establish a proteomics and gene chip lab in systems biology. In 2001, joined Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN) as Director of Proteomics to head a team to develop a proteomics platform. Successfully developed a multiplexed immuno-PCR approach that enabled the measurement of analytes in plasma with zeptomolar sensitivity. In 2003, was appointed Associate Professor at McGill Medical School. Established a pharmacoproteomics lab that led to the discovery of biomarkers for chronic rhinusinusitis, and novel targets for anti-proliferative drugs. Pioneered mass spectrometry methods to quantify biomarkers in complex samples, such as plasma and tissue extracts. Spearheaded a collaboration with Merck and application development with Silicon Kinetics. He is currently a Professor at the Proteogenomics Research Institute for Systems Medicine in San Diego.

Author of 36 publications and one book; Editor-in-Chief of Proteome Science since 2002. Recipient of multimillion dollar grants from NIH, HFSP, March of Dimes, Pew Foundation, Genome Canada, Genome Quebec, CIHR and CFI. Numerous patents and patent applications related to proteomics and mass spectrometry.
