Sylvia started her career in aerospace and defense at McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC) now The Boeing Company in Long Beach California as a Procurement and Materials Management Intern in 1979. In 1984 she was selected to launch MDC’s EDI program for the Commercial Aircraft Division. In the role of Project Manager, Sylvia worked across a variety of vertical groups and led a team of 4 programmers. She also worked with senior management to establish a corporate wide EDI program in other MDC divisions. In 1985 Sylvia was selected to represent MDC at ANSI X12 meetings. She chaired the Materials Management Subcommittee for two years and participated in the Technical Assessment Subcommittee responsible for approving all new standards and maintenance requests to existing transaction sets including all HIPAA EDI transaction sets.
In 1998, Sylvia joined Harbinger Corporation (GXS) as a SAP ecommerce consultant. She provided project management for implementation of Harbinger TLE EDI software, EDI mapping. Additionally, she provided systems analysis, mapping and testing of SAP EDI modules and EDI maps.
In 1999, Sylvia joined PaperFree Systems (Sybase) as a Professional Services Trainer. In this capacity she provided EDI mapping and training for the ECMap products to the healthcare, P & C insurance carriers, and utility companies to companies including Aetna, Travelers, and WebMD (Emdeon). Additional duties at PaperFree included developing training materials and product testing.
As a HIPAA consultant in 2002, Sylvia lead a team to design the technical architecture for a new E-commerce system using Windows 2000 and Sybase EDIServer products for the State of Nebraska Medicaid Department. She was responsible for training, best practices documentation, and product testing.
Sylvia provided product and project management services to a team of fifteen developers for a HIPAA testing software suite from Advent Software, Ltd. in Pune, India. Additionally, she wrote the product requirements, testing rules, and participated in product testing.
From 2003 to 2008, Sylvia served as Managing Partner with full profit and loss responsibility of GEFEG US, a branch of GEFEG mbH based in Berlin, Germany. GEFEG mbH is the world’s first company to provide commercially available software for the documentation, analysis, and design of eBusiness data models, EDI, XML, and in-house data formats, all in one product. Sylvia led a team of eleven persons in the areas of finance, sales, marketing, software engineering, and quality assurance for the U. S. variants of the GEFEG. FX and GEFEG Validation EDI, XML, and UML software products. GEFEG software is used by ANSI X12 and numerous large multi-national corporations and governments.
Sylvia is past Chair of the ANSI X12 Communications and Control Subcommittee. ANSI X12C is responsible for the development and maintenance of EDI design standards X12. 5, X12. 6, and HIPAA implementation guides for 824 and 999 Technical Report 3 (TR3s). Sylvia is a U. S. Delegate to the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT). From 2004 to 2006 Sylvia served as Project Manager for the development of the Project Schedule and Cost Performance Management Specification at UN/CEFACT leading a multi-national team in the design and development of a Business Process and XML standard. Sylvia is also a designated expert to the ISO Technical Committee 154, Processes, data elements and documents in commerce, industry and administration.
Sylvia has contributed to the development of specifications, naming and design rules, industry implementation guides, and best practice recommendations for the Aerospace Industry Association (AIA), Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), Open Applications Group, Inc. (OAGI), and the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) UBL and Emergency Management Technical Committees.
