Our client desires a method to detect the presence of residual casting sand on the surface of metal foundry castings, in order to determine the level of completeness of the de-sanding step which follows casting. The cast pieces can have complex shapes and spaces which are not easily visible. The weight of residual sand to be detected is within the expected variation of the weight of the cast parts. The inspection method must be portable, fast, inexpensive, and any required instrumentation should be easily transported. This is an reduction to practice challenge with a potential award of $25,000.
