I am a fire investigator with a prominent insurance company and am reviewing an investigators report. The investigator determined the cause of fire was due to spontaneous combustion of steer manure in a bag. The manure/compost bag was purchased at home depot. The homeowner used a portion of the manure and left the remaining manure in the bag. I have never heard of composted steer manure spontaneously combusting. Does anyone have any information or scientific data to prove such a hypothesis. I do believe raw manure can spontaneously combust if piled in large quantities, but not in a bag purchased from a store.
