the white house and nasa announced they would like to keep the international space station open through 2024, an extension of four years. In a joint statement wednesday afternoon, white house science adviser john holdren and nasa administrator charles bolden said the station offers enormous scientific and societal benefits.
Nasa hopes to use the station to study the effects of long-duration space flight on astronauts in preparation for new missions beyond earth in the coming decades. The iss is also needed for studies of long-range space flight, as a platform for earth science studies and to boost a growing private space industry, bolden and holdren said.
Funding for the space station must go through congress.
What are the chances that funding will be passed? What are the ramifications for the space program either way?
Getting your name and expert opinion published on our blog is a great marketing opportunity. If interested, please send a response to the prompt via znotes within 1-2 days. Donã¢âât forget to include your full name.

we are looking for experts who can provide their insights and feedback about a startup company with whom we are discussing a potential equity investment.
Company description
a transportation network to move satellites and other assets deployed to space through high-powered electric propulsion space tugs. By meeting with satellites in a nominal orbit and taking them to their final destination. This startups in-space transportation allows satellites to reach orbits currently inaccessible to new, small launch providers and lowers the cost of access to traditional, deep orbits by up to 40%.
Target experts
we are seeking feedback from experts that have interest, knowledge or background in:
industry: aerospace and defense, satellite communication, space, spacecraft, rockets, academics, telecommunications
technology: nuclear electric propulsion
users: aerospace engineering, space sciences, nasa, spacex, blue origin
what’s in it for you
if selected, you would be part of a panel of industry experts and early stage investors evaluating the startup. The expected time commitment would be about 2 total hours of your time over 2 weeks. There is no cash compensation for this evaluation. However, over the near-term, you might have an opportunity to play an advisory or consulting role to the company. At a minimum, you would have visibility into hot new startups in your industry.
Who we are:
we are an online investment platform working to provide a fair and transparent process for startup evaluations and that selects the companies that will outperform other startups in the next three to ten years.

We are the global leader in open innovation competitions with clients ranging from fortune 1000, large-scale not-for-profits, and governmental agencies. With more than a decade of experience, we have a proven track record of crowdsourcing innovation solutions from the world’s smartest people, who compete to provide ideas and solutions to important business, social, policy, scientific, and technical challenges. We are an authorized zintro partner.
Our client seeks bio-inspired approaches for compact and efficient advanced exercise concepts (aecs). These concepts are needed to counteract muscular atrophy and improve the overall wellness of astronauts living in zero-gravity during a 21 day mission.
In particular, our client would like to find new concepts that are inspired by biology. This type of biomimicry has shown to be efficient and durable in many cases. They require bio-inspired exercise mechanism that will be the basis for resistive and aerobic exercises for astronauts. We have often found that professionals with experience in adjacent subject areas of can help to deliver the best solutions and so if you are interested in participating in the challenge.
A minimum of three $5,000 awards will be given out for this theoretical challenge and only a written proposal is required. To enter you must first register our platform and you will then be able to see the full requirements, and submit your solution.

europe’s rosetta spacecraft reached its final destination today after a decade-long journey into deep space that aims to place the first lander on a comet. Rosetta began orbiting the churyumov-gerasimenko comet to glean information about the mass of dirty ice, dust and gas, according to the european space agency, which launched the probe in 2004. In november, it’s due to send a smaller landing craft down onto the comet to take more measurements.
“ten years we’ve been in the car waiting to get to scientific disneyland,” esa senior scientific adviser mark mccaughrean said today on esa’s online tv channel. “and we’re there now.” scientists hope to learn about the early evolution of the solar system by studying comets, which date back 4.6 billion years when the planets were forming. Researchers also are searching for organic molecules that represent the building blocks for life, which comets may have brought to earth in its early years.
“it’ll help us to model better the evolution of the planets out of the pre-solar nebula,” said gerhard schwehm, an esa consultant and manager of the mission from its liftoff until he retired last year. “there will be a lot of information that helps us understand how processes worked and what happened 4 1/2 billion years ago. It’s information from the infancy of our solar system.”
what are your thoughts?

space exploration
the first flight test of nasa'âs new manned spacecraft may be six months away, but agency engineers are already looking forward to what they will learn from the trial. Nasa'âs orion capsule, which is designed to take astronauts to mars and other far-flung destinations, will blast into space for the first time in december, during the unmanned exploration flight test-1 (eft-1) mission. Orion will travel 3,600 miles from earth, then come rocketing back into the planetâs atmosphere at 20,000 mph.
The december trial is the first of only two flight tests (the second in 2017) before the first crewed mission lifts off in 2021. During this trial, eft-1 will test out orion's launch-abort system, which is designed to steer crew members to safety in the event of a liftoff problem. It will also put orion's heat shield- at 16.5 feet wide, the largest ever built- to the test. Parachute performance and orion's advanced computer system's handling of extreme temperatures, and radiation monitoring will also be key.
What are your thoughts about the orion testing?

The goal of our research is to develop the industry map of the international space equipment market, we need to understand what business models are there, how companies participate in the production chain, etc.
Draft questions (to be updated before the interview):
1. What business models exist in the satellites equipment market (satellite telecommunication equipment, satellite and spacecraft management systems, navigation equipment, etc.)?
2. Do oems sell electronic equipment produced in-house to external clients?
3. What parts are typically outsourced? What technologies are critical and usually kept in-house?
