Wind Turbine Blade

I am a curious teacher. As freezing humid air passes the blade in its rotation, ice possibly in large amounts will accumulate on the blades. I am assuming that equal deposition on all three blades will keep the rotor in balance. However if one blade should shed a large amount, how does the mechanism deal with the imbalance or are the blades so massive that shedding ice is a small event. How does the equipment deal with ice on the aerodynamic surfaces? Does it have a deiceing capability?

Do you know where i can find cross section examples similar to the old jacobs wind turbine blade. These are basically flat on the one side, having the airfoil shape on the opposite side. Looking for various designs similar to this concept. Can you suggest versions of this that may be the most efficient. Any direction to such would be appreciated. Thanks. Devon drake

Wind Turbine Blade

Hello, i am a energy commerce major at texas tech university. I do not pretend to know the all the engineering thats goes into commercial windmills, but i had an idea for home windmills. I understand that commercial windmill blades are made out of carbon fiber because of its strength and light weight. I do believe this is where much of the cost of commercial windmills is incurred. I am proposing that home turbine blades can be made using thin aluminum metal and forming a hollow structure that can be pressurized with helium of the inside. The helium pressure gives the thin aluminum more strength and decreases it weight. It has been a while since a have taken chemistry so i'm not sure if the helium would diffuse through the aluminum or not my guess would be it would eventually. Therefore the inside of the blade would have to be coated with latex or something. Is this a dumb idea or could this possibly work?
