Wind Turbine Design
In water turbine design a dimensionless number defines the shape of the turbine wheel or rotor or whatever it is called. For high numbers it starts with the 3 bladed kaplan wheel, then 4, 5, 6 to 8 blades, then it goes to the francis turbine and reaches the pelton wheel.
Has there been something similar in the wind turbine industry? I visited the wind power expo and had some interesting discussions why are practically all wind turbines 3 bladed? Is it because with wind we do not have that high head available and we are at the bottom end, that is 2 or 3 bladed range. Yet, i like to look at wind turbines, vertical that could look more like a francis turbine.+2 Other Responses
Wind Turbine Drivetrain
For a wind turbine drive train expert - why aren't the generator and other electrical components mounted at the base of the turbine for easier installation and maintenance? This would also reduce tower top weight. A right angle drive at the top driving a vertical drive shaft would work.
